What are the major challenges you and your scientific communities have faced in leading African science that responds to the needs of the communities you serve?

“Challenges have been around contextualisation of research that we are implementing.

Most of the research has been drafted or written and developed by foreigners who do not understand the local context. So when it comes to operationalising it, we experience challenges because there are aspects that have not been contextualised during the development and planning of the research.”

Why is now the time to pursue the GLISTEN initiative?

“The GLISTEN initiative is coming in at a timely moment, especially around funding where there has been a lot of shift in terms of funding due to ongoing geopolitics in global health financing.

This initiative is important at this particular time, bringing together African researchers to identify local funding and partners who can collaborate with researchers internally so that they can develop their own research agendas and look for local funding.”

What do you see as the most exciting opportunities for the GLISTEN initiative?

“An exciting opportunity for the early-career researchers is to have a platform to ride on the giants of already established researchers who are in the platform.

This is an opportunity for young researchers in Africa to leverage the expertise in the platform. ”
